Our Family Coalition Our Family Coalition (OFC) promotes the civil rights and well-being of Bay Area lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) families with children and prospective parents through advocacy, education, social networking, and community organizing. We value collaboration with other organizations and individuals across the Bay Area. Our Family Coalition has grown to have approximately 750 member families of more than 2500 people, with many other individuals and families participating in our activities. Our Family Coalition is a part of newly emerging efforts to increase visibility and support for LGBTQ people in the East Bay. Our work includes offering educational programming responsive to members needs; increasing the visibility of LGBTQ in the media and in political forums; training parents to advocate directly on behalf of their children to create safe and welcoming environments for their children in their schools and elsewhere; producing public educational materials including a quarterly newsletter, a semi-monthly e-newsletter and moderating three discussion listserves for parents; holding social forums and events and peer-peer support groups that facilitate the development of support networks for LGBT parents and their children and allow the children to see their families reflected in others around them; and offering cultural competency trainings to health and social service agencies.
Our Family Coalition celebrates multicultural LGBTQ families, combing support for families with exciting social justice and advocacy work to make the Bay Area safe, inclusive and welcoming for all families. This is an exciting time to be working with queer families in the East Bay, and we are looking for a new coordinator to take this work to a new level. Position Responsibilities Our Family Coalition is seeking an East Bay Program Coordinator to spearhead our work in Alameda County. The East Bay Program Coordinator will manage the development, logistics, outreach, and visibility of these current and new programs. This position will also involve representation of OFC in the community and in the media, and supporting and training parents to advocate on behalf their children and families. The headquarters for Our Family Coalition is in San Francisco, and we have an office in Oakland at the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights. The East Bay Program Coordinator will work in both locations. The position reports directly to the Community Program Director.
Responsibilities include: Working to develop and realize programs for LGBTQ families, their allies and others from diverse ethnic, linguistic, socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds; Coordinating logistics for and attending social and educational events in Alameda County; Coordinating and leading discussion groups for LGBTQ parents and their allies; Participating as one of a team of trainers offering trainings to health and social service providers; Leading logistical coordination and material production for East Bay programs and assist with other programs as needed; Conducting outreach for programs in the East Bay, including updating website content and producing digital and hard copy promotional materials; Representing Our Family Coalition in efforts to further the rights and equality of all LGBTQ people, with a focus on families; Representing OFC in various venues, including meetings, interagency collaborations, and other venues; Conducting outreach to organizations and individuals in Alameda County to build collaborative efforts between OFC and other community based organizations; Working collaboratively with other program staff to plan and implement OFCs dynamic and growing social, advocacy and educational programming; Cultivating and maintaining relationships with parents and community members, and Reporting on programs to private and public funders. Qualifications: The desired candidate will possess the following qualifications: Has at least 2-3 years work experience in community outreach and/or community organizing; Is organized and able to coordinate multiple activities with timely competition and follow-up; Willing to work nights and weekends, including attending regular evening group(s); Comfortable working with and doing outreach to individuals/groups from diverse backgrounds; Passion for LGBTQ family equality; Is comfortable meeting and communicating with new people; Is a quick learner with initiative; Is a creative and strategic thinker; Can work both independently and collaboratively; Has a drivers license and regular use of personal vehicle (mileage reimbursement provided); Is familiar with the East Bay region; Is comfortable with common computer software packages (MS Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.) and ability to design basic outreach materials. Desired Qualifications: Has experience working with people from multicultural backgrounds; Experience working in the LGBTQ community, either in a paid or volunteer capacity; Has experience in outreach and community organizing in Alameda County; Knowledge and experience with computer graphics programs such as the Adobe Suite, Publisher, and/or others; Has experience advocating for/with underrepresented groups; Fluent in a language in addition to English, especially Spanish. Detail oriented.
Compensation and Application Process: This position is a full time position with health benefits. Salary: $38,000-$40,000, DOE.
