"Lesbian to the Rescue: Dr. Marie Equi & the 1906 Earthquake
Relief"
is the title of a special progam, Tuesday, April 11th, at the
Eureka Vallely/Harvey Milk Memorial Branch, 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM. Co-produced
by the Hormel Center of the SF Public Library and the GLBT Historical Society, the program is in
commemoration of the 1906 Earthquake and Fire Centennial. Marie
Diana Equi (b April 7, 1872, New Bedford, MA; d July 13, 1952,
Portland, OR) was a medical doctor, activist and one of few physicians
to perform abortions during her practice. Her fascinating story
recounts her work as a physician and sufragist who was arrested with
birth contgrol advocate Margaret Sanger in 1916, and later was
sentenced to San Quentin Prison for her anti-war views in 1920. Equi's
life as an open lesbian came to light only in 1983 with discovery by a
University of Washington graduate studdent of documents in the Naitonal
Archives. Her partner of more than 20 years, Harriet Speckart, worked
as an assistant in her office. Read more in articles included in
Wikipedia, the Oregon History Project and the Gay & Lesbian Archive
